ASHA's Polling & Public Service Announcement Aims to Educate & Encourage Early Treatment

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) released a recent national poll to coincide with Better Hearing & Speech Month (the month of May). The poll shows that a majority of communication professionals believe parents are generally unaware of the early warning signs of communication disorders. To align with the results, ASHA created a new broadcast public service announcement (PSA) that encourages parents to seek help if they have concerns about their child's speech/language or hearing abilities.

Over 69 percent of audiologists and speech-language pathologists surveyed across the United States said parents of young children are unaware of the early warning signs of speech/language disorders. Children with hearing loss often go undetected for an average of one year, according to 32 percent of respondents.
